Michigan animal lover reportedly killed trying to stop man beating dog
↗︎ ↳The sheer quantity of animal abusers that are interested in and willing to also kill humans really tells you a lot about society. There are so so many angry men in the world who are beating up defenceless dogs and more it makes me deeply sad. —added 4:41pm on 30/12/24 ❧
Musk and the death of democracy

I am constantly forced to think about Elon Musk and his egomaniacal, loud, and unearned positioning in society and emerging formal role in government in the US. Today I want to talk about consent, particularly in how consent has forged Musk as either a “super genius” or “capitalist success story”. He seems to have been depicted, at least in Australia, as an underdog innovator whose singular fortitude has allowed him to rise to power — this, at least, is Rupert Murdoch’s position on things, and you can bet that he wishes he was Musky, too. Obviously, this is a manufacturing of consent to Musk’s businesses — none of which he has meaningfully contributed anything to — and a demonstration of how consent is built. From “humble beginnings” Musk has “changed the world”, they say, which is a significantly empathetic narrative verging on outright lies. The reality, of course, is that “daddy got rich killing people” and he bought s...

Trump sides with Musk on support for H-1B visas for foreign tech workers
↗︎ ↳Frighteningly, this indicates to me that musk is pulling all the strings and trump is a magnetic front for more proud racists and xenophobes (though, musk’s enamouring of adf is putting him close to front runner on contemporary nazi). And yeah, all other major corpo’s are either looking forward to the musk presidency for tax reasons, or because like Apple and Meta, they are fully committed to Musk Fascism™. —added 2:18pm on 29/12/24 ❧

ML SummaryBrazilian authorities have declared that Chinese workers at a construction site for BYD, a Chinese electric vehicle company, are victims of human trafficking, with over 160 individuals reportedly working in "slave-like conditions." The Brazilian Labor Prosecutor's Office has confirmed that both BYD and its contractor, Jinjiang Group, are providing accommodations for the workers until their contracts are resolved. The companies have disputed the claims, with Jinjiang stating that the allegations have harmed the dignity of Chinese people and denying any illegal practices. Concerns were raised regarding the workers' living conditions and food hygiene, prompting further investigation.
A meeting between the companies and authorities is scheduled for January 7, where a proposed deal could potentially clear them from investigation, although scrutiny from labor inspectors and federal prosecutors is expected. The Bahia factory, which aims to produce 150,000 cars, represents BYD's significant investment in Brazil, valued at around $620 million. The situation has sparked discussions on Chinese social media about worker rights, with some users noting that the conditions are reflective of typical Chinese construction sites. Prominent commentator Hu Xijin emphasized the need for Chinese companies to improve living conditions for their workers. The case highlights the challenges BYD may face as it continues to expand its influence in the global market.
